SECOND HALF DIVISION RACES DOWN TO THE WIRE

The second half is still up for grabs in all divisions...

In AA, the Pirates and A’s are presently tied with one game each left to play this week.  The Angels are out of contention, but have an opportunity to force their friends the A’s into a playoff if they can beat them this week.  And the Giants could spoil the Pirates chances of a second half playoff.  Meanwhile, the Phillies notched their first victory of the season over the Dodgers.

In AAA, it's complicated.  The Pirates are in no longer in control of their own destiny.  Let's just say there are too many scenarios to list in this space.  If the the Dodgers and Pirates both win their games AND the Dodgers win that tie from earlier in the second half, they will tie for first in the second half. The Giants were making a second-half run and fell a bit short – but they could still have an impact on the AAA second half standings if they can beat the Pirates this week. And if the Dodgers and the Pirates both lose this week, it opens the door for the A’s or the Angels.  Even though the Phillies are looking up at the other five teams, they shocked the Pirates last week and can still affect the final second half standings with a last-game-of-the-season win.

In the Major division,  it's just as complicated.  The Giants and the Dodgers could still both wind up 7-4 in the second half.  The Giants will have to beat the city tournament champion NSLL A’s this week, and the Dodgers will have to beat the SSLL Seminoles (who are an intra-league best 18-2) on Tuesday and the SSLL Bulldogs on Thursday.  The A’s meet the Bulldogs on Tuesday, and will end up 6-5 for the second half if they can win.  The phrase "three-way-tie" is a scheduler’s worst nightmare – but it could be a reality.  Meanwhile, the first-half champion Phillies will just have to wait and see who they’ll play in the championship game.

In tee-ball - it seems certain that the season will end in a six-way tie for first.  Furthermore, it looks like all teams will finish with the same number of total runs - rendering the run-differential tie-breaker inconsequential.  And so they'll all get a trophy.  This seems to happen every year in tee-ball.
